The MAPP is a homegrown bimonthly intercultural multidisciplinary unruly neighborhood cultural happening. It’s not an “art walk” (thank god). Instead, it’s a collage of 10-15 odd spaces transformed into mini-cultural centers, focused on the intimate experiences of culture and people. The charm of the MAPP is that you never know quite what’s going to happen until you get there, so don’t be miffed if you can’t find up-to-date information ahead of time. The point is to arrive, and embrace the adventure. Plus, you’ll get a program (with an actual map) to navigate the event

San Francisco Hearts HAITI :: A Benefit Concert at the Independent SF
01.27.10 | 9 pm
San Francisco, CA
The Bay Area’s music community has a longstanding tradition of coming together for benefit shows in times of crisis, and the Haiti quake certainly qualifies as a crisis. In its aftermath, world beat maestros (and frequent supporters of humanitarian causes) Sila and Maisha Productions have organized a benefit concert for earthquake relief boasting some of the Bay Area’s best bands and solo artists. The show, called “San Francisco Hearts Haiti,” takes place at the Independent January 27, and features SILA, Bayonics, Native Elements, Joe Bagala, Meklit Hadero, Thank You Julius, and DJ sets by Jeremiah (with Afrobeat Nation), Non-Stop Bhangra, Felina, Amar and J-Boogie. This stellar lineup incorporates a diverse mix of genres and musical styles: Afrobeat, Latin, reggae, bhangra, soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, dub/downtempo, and more.

Over the Mountain – A World Premier Play by Brian Thorstensen, Directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges, Music by Meklit Hadero. At the Brava Theater
04.15.09 to 04.25.09

8 pm
San Francisco, CA
The story begins when a female writer is eventually detained, by her local government. She encounters two government clerks sent to interrogate her, and a human rights vs. government needs develops. Over the Mountain surpasses ideas of philosophy or political discussion. At its essence, it is about family – those created by birth and those developed by choice. It shows the human spirit at its worst and best. It also shows how the family we are born into can shape us, but may not completely define who we become in our communities. This piece asks questions in hopes of giving an audience a chance to evaluate its own contemporary caste systems, economic values and artistic worth within its society.

There are 8 performances in all. Wednesday the 15th is preview, and Thursday the 16th is opening night. This work is an exciting creative departure and expansion for me, so I hope to see you!

Red Poppy Art House and Funders From Under Series Present: Nefasha Ayer
11.01.08 | 8 pm
San, CA
“Funders From Under” is a strategy to link individuals of mixed incomes working in non-arts industries with the endeavors of local Bay Area Artists to enhance the Bay Area arts economy through generating grass-roots individual funding in the arts. Funders From Under is a strategy, not an organization. It is an invitation for you to put a small one-time contribution towards a specific artistic goal, or project, wherein you will become one of the direct funders empowering its completion. On this night, the Funders From Under Series presents its first concert performance of Nefasha Ayer with the targeted goal being to fund the travel costs of Nefasha’s first Northwest Tour. They need your support!

Tonight’s concert offers tickets at varying levels of contribution for the purpose of raising the maximum funds while maintaining a diverse audience of support. Please come and join in supporting this spectacular ensemble as they embark on the next leg of their musical journey.
